When: Wednesday, December 5th 2012 (time TBA)
Where: The Thornberry Boys and Girls Club
In an effort to give something back to the community, We Care is an event that celebrates the holiday spirit with our friends in the architecture + design community. Herman Miller, along with their dealers and the Boys & Girls Club of America, are sponsoring an event in which children can come to a local venue to make gifts for the holidays. This will provide the children with the opportunity to make gifts that they might not normally be able to afford to give during the holiday season. At the event, each firm/group will have their own table and craft, and the children will be able to walk from station to station and engage the professionals as they build that craft together. The event will enable children to go home not only with a sense of accomplishment, but also gifts to give to family and friends. In addition to crafts, there will be a Santa available for pictures with the children, games, face painters, and much more! If this sounds like an event you would like to participate in please email Amanda at programs@widkc.org.

Women in Design-Kansas City doesn’t charge its members dues like many other professional design organizations; we rely on sponsorship to continue providing both free and affordable events.
If you know of a company or business, whether or not it’s within the design industry, that would be interested in sponsoring our organization, we ask that you please help out in one of the following ways:
Forward the sponsorship letter to them

What about design do you wish you had learned earlier?
“How important it is to actually understand how materials come together and the research involved in this process. You can’t actually design anything well unless you understand all the elements that compose that building system.”

Do you have any advice to offer young design professionals?
Call it a cliche, but networking is absolutely the way the world works now in terms of getting hired. With advertised positions routinely attracting dozens, if not hundreds, of worhty applicants, an individual needs to find some way to stand apart from the crowded field of competitors for that one job. Sometimes skills and experience can set someone apart, but more often than not, it’s knowing someone who is directly or even indirectly connected to the firm or organization that is hiring…”
