recap: KSU Tour

December 3, 2014 in Events by admin

Earlier this month, two of our members – both associate architects at Gastinger Walker Harden+ BeeTriplett Buck – had the privilege of partnering with Kansas State University’s Women in Design group for a day of food, fun, and learning. The group started the day at GWH + BB’s downtown office with a tour and informational session about firm structure, culture, and project types.

After lunch, the group went on a private tour of The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. The tour included Helzberg Hall and Muriel Kauffman Theatre, the orchestra pit, back stage, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, and much more. The tour was both informative and inspiring, and we would like to thank Eric Miller – one of KCPA’s Production Services Managers – for showing the group around.

The day concluded with a brief walking tour of Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza. The group was able to see and experience several projects designed by the women at GWH + BB - including the Valencia Place Stair and the Granada Garage. It was a great day and a fun collaboration between Kansas City’s Women in Design and the students at Kansas State University. We hope to participate in similar events again in the future. Thank you to the K-State crew for driving to Kansas City to spend the day with us!

recap: WIA Symposium

December 3, 2014 in Events, News by admin

On November 7th and 8th, design professionals and students gathered at the Sam Fox School of Architecture at Washington University in St. Louis. The event marked the 40th anniversary of the 1974 Women in Architecture Symposium, also held at Washington University, which was one of the first academic conferences to examine women’s roles within the profession. The 2014 event focused on assessing the achievements of the past four decades against the unresolved goals identified in 1974. November’s event opened with a keynote lecture by Nasrine Seraji, founding partner of Paris’s Atelier Seraji and dean of the Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Architecture Paris-Malaquais, entitled “As a woman I have no country, as a woman my country is the world of architecture.” The next day featured panels on Feminisms: Then and Now, Women in Architectural Education, and Women in Design Practice. Workshops on negotiation, licensure and practice formed the final day of the event. The 2014 student organizers created an exhibition on the historical and present-day problems facing women in the profession, which was displayed throughout the week.

recap: Day of Shadowing

November 6, 2014 in Events by admin

Women in Design’s Day of Shadowing event was a great success.  On October 22nd, some of Kansas City’s top design firms welcomed high school students from 14 different high schools to the field of design providing educational activities and creative group projects. This year we had 13 firms participate and 75 students attend!
We would like to thank the following firms for their involvement:
HMN Architects, HTK Architects, Gould Evans, AECOM, Burns & McDonnell,
WSKF Architects, Dimensional Innovations, PGAV Architects, BSA
Lifestructure, Willoughby Design, Hoefer Wysocki Architects, DLR Group,
and Populous

Students had the opportunity to tour around a professional interior design workplace and observe work of Architects, Engineers, Interior Designers, and Graphic Designers. Educational activities included design charrettes and discussions to learn about the process of design including project renderings, document and construction sets, and creative development in each phase of design.

The design firms concluded the day by providing lunch for the students along with a discussion about education, college programs and requirements to major in design fields as well as future careers.  A perfect day to be an aspiring designer! Thank you to the firms and teachers for sending us the pictures below.

WiD-KC Journal: RISE

September 4, 2014 in News by admin

Women in Design Kansas City is proud to announce that it will publish its first issue of RISE in Spring of 2015!

This first issue of the Women in Design Journal: RISE will be focused on The Contest of Meaning. As design projects increase in complexity and impact, the insight to properly identify and coordinate challenges and solutions becomes highly necessary. As windows of opportunity multiply and expand for professionals in the design fields, the ability to manage time, identity, and personal enrichment becomes more and more important. As management responsibilities or company size grow, communication hierarchy and office culture require more organizational definition. A contest of meaning exists in every design task and career-life decision – the first issue of RISE aims to discuss and elaborate on methods of approaching and handling the inescapable dilemmas of precedence and selection in an age of creative abundance and possibility.

How does one decide what is most meaningful…and to whom?

How do I make a submission?

·         To submit an idea for a paper, please send the following:

·         A 2 – 4 paragraph abstract explaining how your paper fits the ”Contest of Meaning”theme

A 1 – 2 paragraph biography including education and work experience

·         A list of previously published articles (if applicable)

·         Submissions should be made via Email to RISE@widkc.org

In partnership with AIA Kansas City and The Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri, Women in Design is excited to announce Cookie Construction is coming to Kansas City: MARCH 7 – MARCH 28! A six-month leadership program for The Girl Scouts, Cookie Construction is an annual competition in which teams of female design professionals and the Girl Scouts they mentor compete to design and build giant structures made entirely from Girl Scout cookie boxes. The program involves architects, interior architects, and design engineers helping Girl Scouts to work collaboratively towards a creative solution. Kick-off for Cookie Construction 2015 took place on October 18 at Camp Prairie Schooner. At the event, Women in Design and AIA Kansas City educated participating Girl Scouts and their parents on the relevance of architecture and introduced ways to develop important skills for aspiring designers. Girl Scouts engaged in activities simulating the professional process of design, including preliminary conceptualization and creative development through design charrettes, project rendering, discussion, and collaboration. With over sixty-five Girl Scout participants and seventeen professionals from thirteen design firms, Cookie Construction 2015 will be an exciting new annual program for the community! We would like to thank MM Property Management and Remodeling for sponsoring Cookie Construction 2015 Kick-Off Day. To watch these structures come to life on Build-Out Day, SAVE THE DATE: March 7th, 2015 7AM – 12PM Crown Center Mall 2405 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, MO 64108 IMG_1268 IMG_1223 IMG_1101 IMG_1045 IMG_1021
